This past spring I introduced my 11 year old daughter to DeConstructing Criticism during a writing workshop in which she was participating. While sharing her work was never a problem, she would anticipate any kind feedback as personal judgement and try to head it off with self judgement of her own. Jae’s candor, humor and easy approach, along with the illustrations helped her see herself as part of an artistic community, and has set her on the path to embracing criticism as a necessary, less anxiety inducing and beneficial part of the creative process.
In DeConstructing Criticism, Jae Broderick creates an engaging and creative experience for artistic children and parents alike. From middle school to middle age, navigating criticism can be an anxiety inducing endeavor for any artist. With candor, humor and an easy tone, Jae provides accessible and applicable tools from which any artist’s process can benefit. A great resource to keep close, whether you are just finding your artistic voice or reconnecting with it.
